New Headmaster

The Governors of The Oratory School Association are delighted to announce that the new Headmaster of The Oratory Preparatory School, with effect from September 2010, will be Joseph Smith.

In a letter to all parents, the Chairman of Governors, Michael Hasslacher, said:

Dear Parents

When I wrote to you in September about the appointment of a successor to Dr Hillier, I stated that we are very proud of the Oratory Preparatory School’s excellent reputation as a leading Catholic co-educational school, renowned for its academic, musical and sporting success and its exceptional pastoral care. Our aim in appointing a new Head is to ensure we have a person who will continue to lead the School in all these fields.

The Governors have now completed the recruitment process and from an outstanding group of candidates we have now made our selection.

I am delighted to tell you that the new Headmaster of the Oratory Preparatory School, with effect from September 2010, will be Mr Joseph Smith, who is currently Master in charge of a House at Monkton Combe School, Bath.

Joe graduated from Liverpool University with a First Class Honours degree in English. His teaching career began at Colfe’s School in London where he taught English and was a rugby, soccer and cricket coach. For the past 11 years Joe has been first a teacher and Head of Department and now a Houseparent at Monkton Combe.

Joe is married to Debbie who is joint houseparent at Monkton Combe and they have three young children, Sebastian (8), Imogen (6) and Thomas (3) who will all be joining the Oratory Preparatory School next September.

Sport plays an important part in Joe’s school life; as well as being a qualified rugby and cricket coach, he also coaches basketball. He is head of the Army section of Monkton Combe’s CCF and sings in the school choir.

The Governors are delighted to have appointed such an outstanding person to provide exemplary leadership to ensure that The Oratory Preparatory School continues to build on its well deserved reputation for excellence. The appointment is a fitting conclusion to the celebrations of the 150th Anniversary of the foundation of the Oratory School.

Yours sincerely

Michael Hasslacher
