Ngwabi School: Kwazulu Natal

HOW IT ALL STARTED:
For the past six years, our school has had a link school in South Africa. In the year 2000 we travelled away to South Africa on a Rugby tour. We had a bit of surplus money after the tour and wanted to put it towards a valuable project. The LINK organisation put us in touch with Ngwabi School in Kwazulu Natal South Africa. This is where it all began.

THINGS WE HAVE ACHIEVED SO FAR:
There are several projects which have been put in place already; This year saw us fund a new pump, provide books, sports equipment, contribute to the new buildings, add guttering and one further water butt.
The OPS sent many footballs to the school and when these were given to the pupils, the playground was suddenly transformed.

FUNDRAISING:
Last year we held a sponsored walk for the pupils of the OPS to raise funds for Ngwabi. The pupils had to walk 15km which is the average distance the children at Ngwabi walk to school.
We raised an astounding amount of money and the children enjoyed the experience. We have already, thanks to the generosity of the parents, provided much needed funds for Ngwabi. We will need to continue to keep Ngwabi at the top of our agenda.

BENEFITS:
Our link with Ngwabi has proved to be beneficial and important and we plan to keep on working to make sure that it is long term. At a recent LINK conference in London the delegates stressed the importance of a sustainable relationship.
Our plan is to continue to be involved. Mr. Sexon (Former Headmaster of the OPS) and Mr. Osborn (OPS Ngwabi coordinator) have helped the Head of Ngwabi to write the next stage of development for the school and this will require an additional £20 000.
Two new classrooms have been constructed recently completing the next phase of development. The school also wants to have a Community room - something that the whole community could benefit from.
As electricity will soon be connected to the school, the local people need a place where they can assemble and share views and enjoy each others’ company.

The Future:
The completion of a purpose built toilet block is a priority and we will be raising funds aiming to meet a target of £6000 this year.
