Year 4 Trip to the National Gallery

On Monday, 28th January, all the Year 4 pupils went on a trip to the National Art Gallery in Trafalgar Square.

As Year 4 are studying “Journeys” in Aboriginal Art this term, the purpose of the trip was to look at paintings that depicted a 'journey'  as a central theme.

On arrival at the National Art Gallery, the children were split into small groups, each headed by a guide, who chose certain paintings with a 'journey' theme to analyse with each group in detail.

The afternoon’s activities included going on a Treasure Hunt around the gallery, looking for specific paintings, for example, a painting with a lion, a painting of Charles 1st on a horse, sunflowers and an artist’s self-portrait, amongst others.

Lastly, each group chose one of the pictures discussed by the guides to sketch as accurately as possible in their sketch books, for example, “Tobias and the Angel”, Workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio, 1470 – 1480, and “An Allegory with Venue and Time” by Tiepolo, 1754 - 1758.

We left the gallery at 3.00 pm and were back at school by 4.20 pm. The children appeared to enjoy the trip very much and were beautifully behaved… a real credit to the school!

Our trip to the National Gallery by Emma Stegeman

When we arrived, we were all split into groups. Each group had a guide and the guides showed us particular paintings, for instance The Queen of Sheba and a few others. After that, everyone went to have lunch.

When we had finished our lunch, we went into our groups again and set off to look for certain paintings, like “Sunflowers” by Vincent van Gogh, painted in 1888, “Whistlejacket” by George Stubbs, painted in 1762, “Surprised” by Henri Rousseau and “Saint Gregory with the Saints” by Guercino, painted in 1625.

When everyone had finished hunting for pictures in the Quiz, the group leaders chose a picture that the guides had shown us. Then each group had to try and sketch the picture as well as possible.

My favourite picture was “Sunflowers” by Vincent van Gogh.
